(Walt Disney World, 1980s-90s) An original hand-painted stretching portrait on canvas used in Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion. As the elevator in the mansion descends, these portraits "stretch" to reveal a darkly comic twist to the subject's story. However, the consistent "stretching" action eventually causes wear to the canvas, and the portraits need to be replaced. The earliest portraits, such as this one, were hand-painted, while more modern versions are printed. This stretching portrait depicts a lovely young woman balancing on a fraying tightrope as a hungry alligator waits beneath. Designed by Imagineer Marc Davis, this particular image is arguably the most recognizable of the four portraits and has become synonymous with the attraction. The canvas measures 192"x47.5" with an image size of approximately 118"x47.5" and the piece is in very good condition with minor scuffing and surface wear from use. Surviving hand-painted stretching portraits are excessively rare and represent the pinnacle of Haunted Mansion and classic Disney Parks collecting.
