(Disneyland, 1955) An extraordinarily rare collection of (39) reference photos containing over 500 images of the short-lived 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Nautilus exhibit at Disneyland. When the park opened in 1955, Tomorrowland was the least completed section of the park. In an effort to fill in gaps and introduce some variety to the land, which was primarily space-themed, Walt had his Imagineers install original sets and props from his 1954 Sea-Fi epic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, into a walkthrough exhibit that simulated the experience of riding on Captain Nemo's proto-steam punk submarine. Never intended as a permanent feature, the attraction closed in 1966 despite its popularity with guests, who were afforded a chance to take an up-close look at Hollywood movie magic. Reference material for this opening day spectacle is exceedingly rare, with a mere handful of images available online. This collection is far and away the largest body of material we've ever encountered on the attraction. Consisting of (8) vintage gelatin silver 8"x10" single-weight glossy photos, all of which retain WDP ink stamps and hand written numeric codes on the reverse, (11) later 35mm contact sheets on 8"x10" RC paper, and (20) later 2.25" contact sheets on 8"x10" RC paper, the images in this archive chronicle virtually every aspect of the Nautilus exhibit, including all the iconic sets and props, from the 11' model of the ship, to the giant squid outside the porthole, Nemo's organ room with the actual screen used instrument, stylized dive suits and Underwater Electric Pellet Guns, and much, much more. Given that the contact sheets all feature many exposures, the lot actually contains over 500 unique images of the attraction, captured for internal documentary/reference purposes. A better resource to the composition and actual look and feel of this "lost" attraction is difficult to imagine. The photos are assembled in a 10"x11.5" binder and remain in very good to fine condition, with minimal handling wear.
