(Disney, 1949-53) A large section of track from Walt Disney's personal backyard train, the Carolwood Pacific Railroad. Walt's fascination with trains began very early in his life. His father helped install track for the Union Pacific Railroad, and Walt himself worked for the Missouri Pacific Railway as a teenager selling newspapers, candy, and more to passengers aboard the trains. In 1949, Walt purchased his home at 355 Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills Estates. With four acres of land including a huge backyard, he intended to build a large railroad on the property, inspired by friends Ollie Johnson and Ward Kimball, who also had created personal railroads. The track was built at the Walt Disney Studios machine shop by Imagineer Roger Broggie and his staff. The completed Carolwood Pacific Railroad featured 2,615 feet of track and a 1:8 scale live steam locomotive named Lilly Belle, after his wife Lillian. While Walt was developing his ideas for what would become Disneyland, it was his backyard railroad that gave him the idea to surround his future park with what would be known as the Disneyland Railroad. This genuine section of track was actually used and installed as part of Walt's Carolwood Pacific Railroad. Walt dismantled the railroad in 1965 and donated track to the Los Angeles Live Steamers, which they re-installed in Griffith Park. It was later removed and replaced by a more durable track and this section was retained. Measuring 9' 5" x 14", the track is in good condition with expected surface wear to the metal and wood from use and age. The rails feature some of the original spikes from Walt's original installation as well as screws added for the installation at Griffith Park. Due to size, special shipping arrangements will be necessary. Please inquire before bidding.
