(Disneyland, 1957) An original hand-colored map of Tom Sawyer Island that was used in the creation of the park's popular Tom Sawyer Island souvenir maps. While Tom Sawyer Island held its opening ceremonies on June 16, 1956, it wasn't until the summer of 1957 when the attraction received some of its most well-known additions, such as Tom and Huck's Treehouse and Castle Rock Ridge, that the attraction's popularity grew. With the new additions, an updated map was needed to help guests navigate the island. This hand-colored artwork was created during the very early stages of development for the 1957 Tom Sawyer Island map. Several details on this map never made it to the final hand-out, such as the "Mysterious Maze" and "Subterranean Passage" areas on the eastern side of the map. Additionally, Tom and Huck's Treehouse is listed as the "highest point in Disneyland," which was only true until the Matterhorn was constructed between 1958 and 1959. Interestingly, small flourishes in the font choice on this map, such as the "S" and "E" on the compass, also appeared on the large version of the map that was prominently displayed on Tom Sawyer Island, but were changed for the final map handout. Created on art paper that is mounted to a large sheet of art board, this map is entirely hand-colored in colored pencils over printed brownline details. The border and walkways are painted in white, and "Injun Joe's Cave" is handwritten over the paint. There is a note on the reverse that mentions this artwork was to be delivered to Disney Legend Bill Cottrell during its original use. Measuring 17"x21.5" on its art board, the map is in fair condition overall with some spots of moisture discoloration and edge-wear from use. An original map handout is included with the artwork. This is an incredible artifact of Tom Sawyer Island history, that was used in the creation of one of the most popular early Disneyland handouts.
