(Disney, 2002) The very first sketch of Captain Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Director Gore Verbinski joined the project in 2002 and brought aboard frequent collaborator James Ward Byrkit, who served as a creative consultant and storyboard artist on the film. As the two were on their first location scouting trip in the Caribbean, Verbinski mentioned to Byrkit the idea of having Jack’s entrance be him stepping off of a sinking ship. Byrkit loved the idea so much, he immediately sketched storyboards in his notepad in pen. This initial sketch, accomplished in pen on drawing paper, was made before Johnny Depp was even cast or the script was completed. Captain Jack’s iconic entrance and Depp’s performance delighted audiences worldwide, kicking off a franchise that would gross over $4 billion. Measuring 9” x 12”, this important piece of Disney Studio history is in very good condition with light wear.
