(Disney, 1938) A set of (17) ceramic figurines from the Snow White and Seven Dwarfs set created by Brayton Laguna Studios. The first Southern California potters to obtain a license to produce Disney characters, Brayton Laguna was celebrated for the quality of their clays, innovative emotive designs, and vivid glazes. In fact, the turquoise used for Snow White’s dress was a highly-prized secret formulation. This rare and desirable set embodies all the hallmarks that distinguished Brayton Laguna from their competitors, and includes Snow White, Dopey, Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy, a raccoon, a doe, two fauns, three rabbits, a chipmunk, and a squirrel. All Dwarfs, save Doc, are impressed with WDE copyright statements, a sitting rabbit and the squirrel retain 1938 Brayton Disney stickers, the rabbit on all-fours has the remnants of a 1938 copyright stamp, and Snow White is hand-scored with a WDE copyright. Ranging in size from 3.75”x2” and 2.25” deep to 11.25”x5” and 4.5” deep, the pieces are generally in very good condition. The tail of the raccoon was cleanly separated from the body and reattached. Most other pieces exhibit only unobtrusive crazing to the glazes and minor wear from age. While pieces from the Brayton Laguna Snow White line are offered from time to time, opportunities to purchase a set so complete and finely preserved are virtually nonexistent.
