(Disneyland, c.1954-55) An original concept painting of the interior of Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe Saloon by Imagineer Sam McKim. McKim painted over a brownline of his pencil outlines to create this vibrant and easily recognizable image. This original painting was reproduced as decor for the Disneyland Hotel as well as for commercial prints. Originally sold through the Disney Gallery at Disneyland in 1988, the painting is still in its original frame with a WED archive label still attached to the back. McKim began his career as a child actor (Sammy McKim) but found that he enjoyed working behind the camera more and became a story artist for live-action films. In 1954, Sam joined Disney's Imagineering team and began making inspirational sketches for Walt's new theme park, Disneyland. Although McKim is best known to fans as the creator of the oversize souvenir maps that have become a Disneyland tradition, he also contributed to several attractions throughout the park, and some of the first paintings he created as an Imagineer were of the Golden Horseshoe. The painting has an image size of 25.5"x34.5" within a 38.5"x46.5" frame. The condition is very good, with some expected fading to the brownline from age, and some moisture discoloration to the back of the frame. The painting is signed by McKim in the lower-left corner.
