(Disneyland, 1955) An amazing artifact from the grand-daddy of all Disneyland conveyances: The Mark Twain Sternwheeler Riverboat. This two-sided, hand painted wooden sign hung at the ticket booth directly at the entrance to the Mark Twain dock boathouse. It reads 35¢ (painted over 50¢; most likely as a last minute price adjustment), pre-dating specific ticket letters. The reverse side reads “Closed” and would be displayed once the attraction closed for the day. This sign came from a collection of a retired Disneyland employee from the early years of the park. . It is marked “July 17, 1955” with the initials, J.W.” by the employee. The date (Disneyland’s opening day) and initials were added much later, after the sign was retired from several years of use. Measuring 24 x 6 in. and in good condition overall.
