(Fleischer, 1926) Max Fleischer’s original patent certificate for inventing the bouncing ball in sing-along films. In the silent era, Fleischer brought sing-alongs into theaters by projecting glass slides with painted lyrics while the reels were being changed. To convey the timing of the lyrics to the audience, he filmed himself waving a baton with a white ball at the end to point to lyrics painted over a black background in time with the music. The bouncing ball audiences follow while singing in time with the music endures to this day, and served as the precursor to modern-day karaoke. Measuring 12” x 8” the five-page, ribbon-bound document is in good condition with light edge wear and creasing, and light discoloration from age.
