(Mary Blair, 1950s-60s) A hand-painted combination Christmas Card and wrapping paper by Disney Legend Mary Blair. As a color stylist, Blair was a major influence on many of the animated films produced by Walt Disney in the 1940s and 1950s including “Cinderella,” “Peter Pan,” and "Alice in Wonderland.” Later, she found great success as a commercial artist and returned to Disney to work on It’s a Small World for the New York World’s Fair. A consummate artist by every measure, it is no surprise that Blair painted her own wrapping paper for a gift from herself and husband Lee to “Hope and Pres,” Mary’s brother-in-law Preston Blair and his wife Hope. Although clearly dashed off quickly with markers and paint, Mary’s keen sense of design shows through from the delicate angels to the simple graphic flourishes that evoke traditional holly and berry decorations. Measuring 18.5” x 20” this one-of-a-kind work is in very good condition with marks from original tape, folds from original use and storage, and light wear overall including small creases, scuffs, and light soiling.
