(Disneyland, 1960s) Incredible Marc Davis early original concept art for the "Pirates of Caribbean" attraction. Pirates was the last exhibit at the park that Walt Disney actually participated in designing. It was originally envisioned as a walk-through wax museum attraction which would showcase various pirates throughout history. Disney turned to legendary animator, director and Imagineer Marc Davis to create concepts for the attraction. This amazing original concept piece is one of Davis' early ideas for a tableau in the attraction. Accomplished in ink and watercolor on 17"x14" artists board, the artwork features a scene with Captain Kid and his crew. As the attraction developed, and with the success of the boat ride concept of "It's a Small World" at the 1964 New York World's Fair, Disney decided to employ a similar concept on "Pirates of the Caribbean". Although the idea of using historical figures in the attraction was scrapped, it was these early concepts by Davis that not only shaped Disney's vision for the ride, but influenced the look and feel for all of New Orleans Square. The artwork is in good condition with a small corner of the board missing, which does not affect the image. There is some staining and yellowing from age.
