(Disneyland, 1960s) This stunning piece of art was created by Disneyland's Sign & Pictorial Department to hang at the entrance of the long gone, Main Street Tobacconist Shop. This sign is accomplished in the centuries-old technique of reverse-painted, glue chip glass sign making. The technique involved the silk-screening of paint and frisket to glass, acid etching, sand blasting, chemical glue-chipping the surface, and gilding the piece with silver and gold leaf. This technique was passed down from the earliest artisans hired at Disneyland in 1954 to their apprentices which worked into the 1960s. Some original examples of this style can still be found within Main Street and scarce parts of New Orleans Square, such as the "Club 33" address sign. This is a breath-taking reminder of the workmanship and pride held by this valued division of Walt's theme park. This sign measures 17"x12.25" framed, and is in very fine condition. The back of the frame has adhered to it, Leonard Russo's business card within a plastic sleeve. Russo was the Superintendent of Disneyland's Sign & Pictorial Department, and his business card is signed by him in blue ink.
