(Ward, 1950s-60s) An early concept design of large Rocky and Bullwinkle balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. During development, the team realized Bullwinke’s top-heavy design would affect his ability to stay upright. After a redesign and the addition of a turn-of-the-century bathing suit, Bullwinkle made his grand debut in 1961, sans Rocky. The original balloon was eventually retired and replaced by a new balloon featuring Rocky on Bullwinkle’s back in 1996. This concept features cutouts of the characters adhered to a city street background. With an image size of 10” x 11” on an 11.25” x 13” illustration board, the colored marker and black ink concept is in fair condition with heavy creases throughout, tears to the protective laminate covering, smudges, and wear from production use.
