(Ward, 1960s) Jay Ward’s one-of-a-kind Rocky the Flying Squirrel costume. In the early 1960s, Ward was one of the first to use cartoon character mascot costumes after Walt Disney, even preceding sport’s first costume mascot in 1964, Mr. Met. This Rocky costume, sized to a very small adult or a child, shares several stylistic similarities with the Bullwinkle costume seen in a single surviving Operation Loudmouth photograph. The costume’s head is made of faux fur over a base made up of cardboard, duct tape, and a papier-mache-like covering, with mesh in the eyes and mouth to see out through, and a felt-lined cap for comfort. The costume body is of faux fur, with a tail assembled from real raccoon pelts, hard soles to the bottom of the feet, and a decorative belt. The head measuring 16” x 15” x 15” high displays in overall very good condition for its age, with expected light wear overall, the vintage original flight goggles are in poor condition with heavy discoloration to the lenses, small spots of fur loss, and the mouth missing a pink felt lining that was originally in place. The costume body measuring 38” long x 15.5” wide is also in very good condition, with expected wear from use.
