(Disneyland, 1969) Originally conceived in 1951 by Disney artist Harper Goff, then finally completed in 1969 after 7 years of construction, the "Haunted Mansion" was not only one of the most complicated ride attractions ever created by Disneyland Imagineers, it also immediately became one of the crowd’s favorites. In order to move riders underground and off the actual Disneyland Park property, which was necessary because New Orleans Square had already run out of buildable space, a pair of elevators were constructed. Designed as a room with "no windows and no doors", the room featured four portraits on the walls that would "stretch" as the room descends, revealing more to the portraits than originally met the eye. The paintings would have to be replaced on occasion as the constant "stretching" would wear down the canvas. Hand-painted canvases, such as this, were used on the attraction from 1969 to 1972 and were eventually replaced with easier-to-produce printed canvas images. This incredibly rare original "Haunted Mansion" stretch portrait painting was based on designs by Marc Davis and is accomplished in acrylic on heavy canvas by one of the Disney Studio artists. Measures 47"x116". The painting is in very good condition. Beautifully framed and ready for presentation.
