(Disneyland, c.1967) A one-of-a-kind hand-drawn mock-up for the Pirates of the Caribbean guidebook. The Pirates guidebook is one of the most well-known Disneyland souvenir books, and tells the story and background of this fan-favorite attraction through gorgeous photos and concept artwork. This mock-up contains (46) pages of hand-drawn artwork, attributed to Imagineer Ken Chapman, based on the designs of Imagineer Marc Davis. The mock-up is full of hand-written placeholder text next to the artwork, as well as editing notes throughout by Imagineer Marty Sklar. Each page is an individual sheet that is glued together by hand to form the complete book, and many pages have hand-trimmed and applied original artwork with notes, forming an indepth look into how this souvenir guidebook came to be. The entire attraction story is retold here, including re-drawn illustrations based on some of Davis' most popular concept artwork, such as the dog holding the jail key, the pirate auctioneer, the pirate on a cannon, and the pirate's skeletal remains. Original Pirates of the Caribbean artwork is some of the most prized original Disneyland artwork, with a hand-drawn mock-up of the entire attraction experience being an unheard of archive of Pirates of the Caribbean history. Additionally, Sklar's hand-written notes throughout make this not just a testament to the attraction itself, but to the Imagineering process that brought us some of the park's most iconic attractions. Included with this mock-up is an earlier 26-page brownline draft for a portion of the book which has segments of hand-written text and additional notes throughout by Sklar. Also, a final version of the completed guidebook is included. The mock-up measures 11"x9", and is in good condition overall, with some chipping and small tears around the edges and to the spine of the cover from use. Many of the inner pages are loose from the spine, but the mock-up is complete.
