(1923-1978) An original framed section of the first Hollywood sign that was erected in 1923 and removed in 1978. The sign originally read "Hollywoodland" before the letters "land" were removed in 1949. The sign suffered wear over time, which would result in Alice Cooper, Hugh Hefner, and Gene Autry, among others, raising $27,700 per letter to replace the sign. Entrepreneur Hank Berger would eventually acquire the original letters, after recognizing the significance of their historic and intrinsic value. Berger would become infamous for cutting small sections out of the metal letters and creating these commemorative plaques. The plaque tells the story of the Hollywood sign, and includes a gold foil seal and is numbered 1780. The overall frame size is 13.25"x10.25", with the Hollywood sign section measuring just under 1.5"x1.5". The condition is very good with little wear to the frame.
