(Charlotte Clark, c.1940s) An early long-billed Donald Duck doll manufactured by Charlotte Clark. In the late 1920s, Clark saw the growing popularity of Mickey Mouse and realized the potential for Disney-themed dolls. Her creations were of such high quality, that after a short meeting, Walt and Roy Disney immediately hired her to produce official Disney licensed merchandise. Today, original Charlotte Clark dolls are some of the most desirable vintage Disney collectibles. The doll consists of a velveteen stuffed body and tail feathers, corduroy sailor hat and tunic with mother of pearl buttons, cloth beak and legs with felt foot pads, and oil cloth pie eyes. Donald wears his typical aggrieved expression, rendered in fine stitched detailing about the beak and eyebrows. Standing 13.75", the doll is in good condition. The metal wire armature in the legs has breached the top of the feet, there are holes in the foot pads, the hat is detached from the head, the velveteen fabric exhibits an even brown toning over all with a few spots of darker discoloration, the eyes exhibit surface loss and wear, the legs show some wear to the fabric, and the blue corduroy has faded over time.
