(Elvgren, 1937) The original painting for the pinup "Doctor's Orders" by Gil Elvgren. Elvgren (1914-1980) is a noted American pinup artist who graduated from the American Academy of Art in 1936. In 1937, he joined a stable of artists painting calendar pinups for Louis F. Dow, a leading publishing company. During this time, he created 60 original pin-up paintings, including "Doctor's Orders," which has become one of his most famous images. The piece is painted over an earlier work entitled "Figure's Don't Lie," which was reworked using the same face into "Doctor's Orders." The canvas was professionally retouched to conceal elements of the early work that were still visible. Both pinups are typically dated to 1939, but this canvas bears the date April 20, 1937, with copyright attributed to Louis F. Dow Co. Measuring 26" x 32", the painting is in fine condition.
