(Disneyland, 1950s-1970s) Incredible 1950s-1970s Disneyland Sign & Pictorial Dept. reference photo archive. For the casual collector or dedicated Disneyland scholar, here is an unprecedented historical photo archive directly from the original Disneyland Sign & Pictorial Department. Before digitally created imagery and computer inventory, the best way for the prolific DS&P department to archive their work was to literally, walk around the park and shoot photographs of recently completed projects. This way, the photo archive could be referenced when any type of signage needed to be replicated. Before Photoshop and the ink-jet printer’s use at the park, practically every single letter and image of posted signage at Disneyland was hand-rendered by absolute masters of the craft. Upon the initiation of the Disneyland project, Walt rounded up as many of the old movie studio masters who were quickly becoming extinct in Hollywood. He created a haven for these artisans with the park’s Sign & Pictorial Department. Once in place, Walt insisted this department install a mentorship program, where young apprentices would inherit the tricks of the trade. This insured the park would benefit, while an incredible artisan-trade would not wither and die. This absolutely stunning visual record of that department’s work in Disneyland’s ‘golden age’ is testament to the artistry of this division. The archive was handed down to the apprentice-turned-eventual supervisor of the department from his mentor. This personal record of the department’s work through the years shows detail after detail of rarely seen areas in Disneyland. Perhaps the occasional bit of rare signage or an elusive ticket booth might show up in the blurry background of a guest’s photo, but rarely are these details centered on as the object of focus. Amazing, rarely seen details throughout such as the ticket booths for the Viewliner and Space Station X-1, area directional signage, posted ticket denomination signs, the Main Gate ticket booths and rare attraction marquees. This collection (not all pictured), stands alone as an undeniable record of Disneyland’s high standards. Everything from directional signage to the Main Street credit window….restroom sign to exit sign…buckskin banners to works in progress are all represented. Black and white contact sheets to color snapshots and 8 x 10 prints make up the collection. A one of a kind collection, worthy of publication. The archive contains (60) 8 x 10 in. black and white prints, (1) 8 x 10 in. color print, (8) 8 x 10 in. black and white contact sheets, (1) 4 x 6 in. color print, (65) 3.5 x 5 in. color prints, and (48) 3.5 x 3.5 color prints. Collection is in fine condition.
