PLEASE NOTE: DESCRIPTION HAS BEEN UPDATED
(Disneyland, c.1960s-70s) An original mailbox from Main Street at Disneyland. These functional mailboxes have been a fixture of Main Street since the park opened in 1955, allowing tourists to send correspondence with an official Disneyland postmark. The ability to actually deposit mail on Main Street contributes to the intended turn-of-the-century small town atmosphere, and countless souvenir postcards have passed through these boxes, sent to all corners of the world. The mailbox is constructed of heavy cast iron painted olive green. There is drop-down door in the hood of the box to insert mail, and a large drop-down drawer pulls out from the front panel for mail collection. "Bridgeport Castings Co. Bridgeport Conn." lettering is molded into the left and right sides and painted white. A large bracket is welded to the back of the box for mounting. The locking mechanism that secures the mail drawer is absent and the Disneyland placard and frame on the front of the drawer are faithful replacements. Measuring approximately 19.75"x13" and 8.75" deep, the box is in good condition with a 2.5" and a 3.5" crack in the face of the mail drawer, some minor weathering, scuffs, and dings to the paint from outdoor use.
