(Disneyland, 1955) The very rare original Disneyland Employee Badge belonging to Dorothy Manes, the 49th employee of Disneyland Park. Dorothy Manes was the director of Children's Fairyland in Oakland California, when Walt Disney visited the nursery rhyme-themed park in early 1954 while seeking inspiration for Disneyland. Manes gave him the tour of Fairyland, and Walt eventually asked her to come work for Disneyland. She joined Disneyland as the administrator for youth activities and served until retiring in 1972. Her number 49 badge is the lowest we have come across. These stamped aluminum ID number badges were given to all employees before the well-known Disneyland Cast Member name tags were issued. Walt Disney himself carried one of these with ID #1. Also included are three photographs of Manes including two of her taken in Children’s Fairyland before she worked at Disneyland, and one undated. The final item in this lot is an unsigned copy of Disneyland Vice President Jack Lindquist’s letter upon Manes’ retirement, on Disneyland stationery. Measuring 1.75” x 2.5”, the badge is in good condition with expected wear including small scratches and tarnish. The photos measuring 5” x 7” up to 8” x 10” are in very good condition with light wear, and the 8.5” x 11” letter is in fine condition.
