(Walter Lantz, 1940) A rare original production cel of Papa Panda from the 1940 short "100 Pigmies and Andy Panda." In the post-Disney era of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walter Lantz was the creative force behind the character’s cartoons. When Oswald fell out of favor with the movie going audience, Lantz was forced to create a new cast of characters. Among those, the stand out star was Andy Panda. Just one year after his debut, Andy appeared alongside a manic woodpecker named Woody. Woody was a breakout star who soon headlined his own series of shorts, eclipsing Andy’s popularity with audiences. Beginning in the late 1930s, Disney had great success marketing cels through Courvoisier Galleries, and almost every studio attempted to emulate that success by marketing their own art. This particular piece was prepared for sale by the studio. The cel is slightly trimmed to 9" x 12" and has been silk-screened with a Walter Lantz dedication. The image measures 3.5" x 8" and is in very good condition overall, with slight waviness and discoloration from aging.
