(Disney, 1944) A rare Battlin’ Pete insignia patch designed by Disney for the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mickey’s nemesis is depicted knocking out a boxing torpedo, while the three Naval signal flags in the top left corner read “USS.” As part of their contribution to the war effort, Disney artists created around 1,200 insignias for the U.S. military. The logos were extremely popular with the troops, offering levity and a reminder of home during difficult situations in faraway theaters of combat. Measuring 5” in diameter, the embroidered patch displays in good condition with heavy wear and tears from use.
