(UPA, 1957) An original production cel of three fishermen from “Trees and Jamaica Daddy” paired with a color copy background. With a character image of 5.5” x 9” on a 10.5” x 14” cel, the piece is in fair condition with paint loss throughout and cracking. United Productions of America, better known as UPA, was an animation studio founded by former Disney animators who had grown disinterested in the cinematic realism of the studio’s animated features. These artists sought to pioneer a new, experimental visual style which could push the established boundaries of animation. This new style would ultimately help define the look of animation in the 1950s. Offered here are examples from some of UPA’s most notable productions. “Gerald McBoing-Boing”, based on an original story by Dr. Seuss, was the first Academy Award for Best Animated Short win for the studio and has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. “Madeline”, the studio’s second Oscar win, would go on to inspire multiple animated shorts and television series. “Mr. Magoo” was UPA’s break-out star. Created by writer Millard Kaufman and Director John Hubley, the character was based on Hubley's Uncle and W.C. Fields. Magoo starred in over 50 shorts, winning two of their four Academy Award nominations, and the studio’s first full length feature film “1001 Arabian Nights.”
