(Disneyland, 1968-95) A park-used plaque installed at the entrance to Tomorrowland in 1967. By the early 1960s, Walt and his Imagineers knew that Tomorrowland would need to be updated not only because of changing technologies, but because budget constraints when building the park had kept Disney from realizing his vision for the land. By 1965, construction began on a new Tommorrowland, a world on the move, with six new major exhibit areas; "America the Beautiful" in new "Circle-Vision 360," "Flight to the Moon," "Carousel of Progress," "Adventure Thru Inner Space," The PeopleMover, and Coca-Cola's "Refreshment Gardens." The 22-million-dollar project ($5 million more than the original cost of Disneyland) was completed on August 5th, 1967. During the opening dedication, this brass metal plaque was placed at the entrance to the land, just below the flagpole. where it would remain for the next 30 years (removed during the 1998 Tomorrowland renovation). Three decades of constant polishing and weather have taken their toll on the plaque, wearing down the original lettering. However, the plaque is still readable and features a portion of Walt Disney's Tomorrowland dedication speech first spoken on July 17, 1955; "TOMORROWLAND"--A vista into a world of wondrous ideas signifying man's achievements. A step into the future, with predictions of constructive things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideas: The Atomic Age..The Challenge of Outer Space..and the hope of a Peaceful and Unified World." Measuring 17.5"x25", the piece displays in good overall condition. Truly an amazing piece of Disneyland History.
