(Disneyland, 1955-82) An original hand-painted cel and background of the mural in the loading area of Snow White and Her Adventures dark ride. When Disneyland opened in 1955, all of the Fantasyland dark rides - Snow White’s Adventures, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride - featured “cast portrait” murals in the entrance/ride loading area. Snow White’s mural was first sketched by Ken Anderson, then adapted to color and projected on canvas to be created full-sized. Over the years, it would fall on scenic artists to keep the murals bright and touch up any damage. This cel and background were painted at the Disney Studio to keep at Disneyland as a reference for exactly how the characters look in the animated film. Painted in 1954 or ‘55, this background strongly resembles the work of Eyvind Earle, who was at the Studio working on “Sleeping Beauty” and Disneyland projects at the time. Measuring 11.25” x 20” in the 12.75” x 21.25” original frame, the cel and background display in fair condition, with heavy paint lifting and loss, especially to the characters to the lower right. A one-of-a-kind treasure from Disney’s first theme park, Disneyland.
