(20th Century Fox, 1968-73) A screen-used Gorilla facial prosthetic appliance from a “Planet of the Apes” movie. John Chambers designed the makeup for the simians in these films, and received a Special Academy Award for his ground-breaking work in creating non-human characters that could portray emotion. One of his innovations was to brush the piece with pigmented rubber cement to provide color to the latex. The appliance measures 6.5” x 6” displayed on a 6.5” x 8.5” face form. This fragile piece was designed for very short term use and is nonetheless preserved in very good condition, with frayed edges where the appliance was attached and removed from the performer, and a split at the corner of the right eye.
