(Disneyland/General Electric, 1958) An extremely rare pitch brochure for Edison Square. The earliest souvenir maps of Disneyland showed an"Edison Square" off the east side of Main Street, with labels teasing progress-related theming inside. This detailed brochure details the plan for a turn-of-the-century New York street adjacent to Main Street, showcasing innovations in technology such as the shift from gas lamps to electric bulbs and from horse-drawn carriages to gasoline-powered automobiles. The brochure highlights a"The Wizards of Progress" show, the story of technological advancements from the past to the future, presented through lifelike dioramas and"electro-mechanical personalities" - what we now know as audio-animatronic figures. Although Edison Square was never constructed, this show developed into the Carousel of Progress for the GE Pavilion at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, and continues to run today at Walt Disney World. This brochure is the only example we have seen, offering a unique glimpse into the concept of one of Disneyland's unrealized attractions. Measuring 8.5" x 11.25" the 18-page, comb-bound brochure is in very good condition with light discoloration, minimal edge wear, and one of the comb rings broken off.
