(Disneyland, 1967) A one-of-a-kind hand-drawn mock-up of the original Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean guidebook. The Pirates guide tells the background, story, and making of this fan-favorite attraction through gorgeous photos and concept artwork. This mock-up contains 46 pages of hand-drawn artwork attributed to Imagineer Ken Chapman, based on the iconic designs of Imagineer Marc Davis. The piece is full of hand-written placeholder text, with editing notes throughout by Imagineer Marty Sklar. Each individual page is glued together by hand to form the complete book, and many pages have been hand-trimmed and applied to original artwork with notes, forming an in-depth look into how this souvenir guidebook came to be. The entire attraction story is told here, including illustrations based on some of Davis' most popular concept artwork, such as the dog holding the jail key, the pirate auctioneer, the pirate on a cannon, and a pirate's skeletal remains. Original Pirates of the Caribbean artwork is some of the most prized original Disneyland artwork, with a hand-drawn mock-up of the entire attraction experience being an unheard of archive of Pirates of the Caribbean history. Additionally, Sklar's hand-written notes throughout make this not just a testament to the attraction itself, but to the Imagineering process that brought us some of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions. Included with this mock-up is an earlier 26-page brownline draft for a portion of the book which has segments of hand-written text and additional notes throughout by Sklar. Also, a final version of the completed guidebook is included. The mock-up measures 11" x 9", and is in good condition overall, with some chipping and small tears around the edges and to the spine of the cover from use. Many of the inner pages are loose from the spine, but the mock-up is complete. The final guidebook measures 9” x 10.75” and is in very good condition with typical light handling wear.
