(Polk, 1836) A six-page letter and integral address leaf, handwritten by future U.S. President James K. Polk and dated October 10, 1836. The letter, marked "Private," is addressed to Colonel Samuel H. Loughlin and was written by Polk while he served as the Speaker of the House. Polk writes that he was surprised by Judge Hugh L. White's sudden appearance and fanfare at Polk's speech in Tennessee. Polk signed the letter twice, once with his full name and once with the initials "J.K.P." Measuring 7.7" x 9.75", the multi-page letter is in good condition with folds from mailing, smudges, stains, discoloration from age, and edge tears up to 3.5" long.
