(20th Century Fox, 1967) A second master model for Orangutan makeup designed by the legendary John Chambers for the original “Planet of the Apes” film. Chambers cast this orangutan in foam to make a toolstone mold for creating full-head latex appliances that match this in appearance. Chambers himself hand wrote on the bottom “ORANGUTAN 2ND MASTER 3-67.” The masks from this master were used for many secondary orangutan characters in the films, with the second model allowing for a mix of appearances. Chambers was awarded a special Oscar for Makeup for his groundbreaking work on “Planet of the Apes” in 1969. Measuring 8” x 10.5” x 14” tall, the master model displays in fair condition, with cracking and flaking throughout the surface layer. The jaw has a distinct line around it that is original to production, and would have been easily smoothed out in the molds made from this piece.
