(20th Century Fox, 1967) A master model for Chimpanzee makeup designed by John Chambers for the original “The Planet of the Apes” film. Chambers cast this chimpanzee in foam to make a toolstone mold for creating full-head latex appliances that match this in appearance. Chambers himself hand wrote on the bottom “1ST CHIMP MASTER – SLIP ON MASKS (NO TEETH) 3 – ’67.” This compares to the primary character prosthetics, which included teeth and required the actor’s real teeth to be blacked out. The masks from this master were used for many secondary chimp characters in the films. Chambers was awarded a special Oscar for Makeup for his groundbreaking work on “Planet of the Apes” in 1969. Measuring 9.5” x 10.5” x 14” tall, the master model displays in good condition, even with much cracking and flaking of the surface layer from age.
