(Hanna-Barbera, 1959) A pair of rare original storyboard panels of Fred in the Flintmobile from “The Flintstones” episode, "The Snorkasaurus Hunter." These panels were part of two large storyboards used to pitch the show to networks in 1959. Accomplished in graphite, each panel measures 3.5" x 4.75" on 4.5” x 11.75” animation paper that has been mounted to 5.5" x 12.5" cardstock. The panels are in good condition with smudges, glue residue, light creasing, and rips from production use. In 1960, Hanna-Barbera moved beyond Saturday mornings to make television history with the debut of “The Flintstones,” the first animated prime-time sitcom. Despite being inspired largely by the hit adult sitcom "The Honeymooners," the series initial reviews from critics were not favorable, with New York Times critic Jack Gould calling it “an inked disaster.” Regardless of the critics, the show was an instant hit with the audience. The Flintstones would make television history again by having the distinction of being the first animated program to ever be nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Primetime Emmys. With an impressive run of six seasons and 166 episodes, the show remained a staple of the television landscape throughout the 1960s and remains a pop cultural icon to this day. We are pleased to present a selection of storyboard panels from where it all began. The following panels are from “The Snorkasaurus Hunter”, one of two potential episodes which were presented in Joe Barnerra’s pitch to ABC. The episode would eventually be produced and aired as the series 18th episode and is notable for revealing how The Flintstones would meet their beloved pet, Dino.
