(UPA, 1949) An original production cel from the UPA Studios animated film "Ragtime Bear" which featured the first appearance of Mister Magoo. Magoo was created by writer Millard Kaufman and Director John Hubley. The character was based on Hubley's Uncle and W.C. Fields. Columbia was reluctant to release the short at first, but did so only because there was a bear in it (shorts at the time very rarely featured human characters). Magoo was an instant success and the series went on to win two academy awards. Measuring 11"x12" overall, with the character image measuring 5"x6", the cel is in very good condition with light warping. It has been placed on a color copy background. United Productions of America, better known as UPA, was an animation studio founded by former Disney animators who had grown disinterested in the cinematic realism of the studio’s animated features. These artists sought to pioneer a new, experimental visual style which could push the established boundaries of animation. This new style would ultimately help define the look of animation in the 1950s. Offered here are examples from some of UPA’s most notable productions. “Gerald McBoing-Boing”, based on an original story by Dr. Seuss, was the first Academy Award for Best Animated Short win for the studio and has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. “Madeline”, the studio’s second Oscar win, would go on to inspire multiple animated shorts and television series. “Mr. Magoo” was UPA’s break-out star. Created by writer Millard Kaufman and Director John Hubley, the character was based on Hubley's Uncle and W.C. Fields. Magoo starred in over 50 shorts, winning two of their four Academy Award nominations, and the studio’s first full length feature film “1001 Arabian Nights.”
