(Carlson, 1970s) An It’s a Small World style doll and sketch by Joyce Carlson. Carlson began her career in the Traffic Department of Walt Disney Studios in 1944 and by 1947 was working in the Ink & Paint Department where she would remain for 15 years. In 1962, Walt Disney asked her to join WED where she helped design and build models and dolls for the Carousel of Progress and the Pepsi It's a Small World pavilion under the direction of Mary Blair and Marc Davis. When the attraction was moved to Disneyland, she played a key role in its construction as well as the attractions in Florida, Tokyo and Paris. She has been quoted as saying that the Balloon Dolls and Can-Can Dancers of the Paris scene in the attraction were her favorites. This incredible doll was made by Carlson at the studio perhaps as a model for a doll in one of the attractions and then given as a baby gift to a friend in the Ink & Paint Department in the 1960s. It is accompanied by a signed rough sketch of a doll from the attraction. Constructed of papier mâché' with pipe cleaner hair, plastic diamond eyes, a paper fan dress and hand-painted accents, the 15" x 15" tall doll hangs from a 19" tall papier mâché’ “balloon" meant to be suspended from the ceiling. The rough sketch of a sitting doll has an image size of 14" x 18" on uneven 17" x 20" paper. It has been dedicated "To Susie with Love--Joyce." The paper is in good condition with yellowing from age and wear to the edges including small tears. The doll has been lovingly preserved and is in fine condition with some dust soiling from age and display. A truly rare artifact from one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland.
