(Disney, 2004) An early concept drawing for The Flying Dutchman from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” by the film’s conceptual artist, James Byrkit. Captained by Davy Jones, The Flying Dutchman is “A ship from hell, made of pallid wood and white bones, covered with the very stuff of the sea: shells, coral, flotsam, seaweed,” making it one of the most memorable ships in cinema. This concept captures the filmmakers’ vision for the ship’s menacing appearance, elevating it to more than a mere vessel, into virtually a character unto itself. Accomplished in graphite on vellum and measuring 17” x 11”, the drawing is in fine condition.
