(Disney, 1940) An extremely rare Figaro production maquette from “Pinocchio.” Maquettes such as this one were used by animators for three-dimensional character reference. Only a handful of these hand-painted pieces were produced and distributed among the animators. Painted on the bottom of the base is the name “Helen Nerbovig McIntosh.” Nerbovig started off in Disney’s Ink & Paint Department as one of their first paid trainees. Nerbovig’s duties included painting character maquettes for productions, but what really set her apart were her cel setups. Walt was so impressed with her work that he made her the head of the Cel Setup Department, which worked with Disney’s new partner Courvoisier of San Francisco to sell cel setups to collectors. Her impressive work continues to be in high demand at auction houses worldwide. She most likely painted this particular maquette for herself. Measuring 6.5” x 4.25” x 6”, the hand-painted ceramic maquette is in very good condition with light scuffs and wear from production use.
