(Japan, 1930s) A collection of six Flip the Frog bisque figurines playing instruments. Four of the Flips play the tuba and two of the Flips play the clarinet. Measuring 3.5” tall each, the figurines are in fair to good condition with heavy paint loss, discoloration from age, scuffs, a broken-off shoe on one tuba Flip, and “Stone Harbor NJ” written in black marker on one clarinet. Ub Iwerks, the animator chiefly responsible for the design and animation of the first 15 Mickey Mouse shorts, left the Disney Studio in 1930 after a falling out with Walt. Ub set up Iwerks Studio to produce a series of cartoons with all new characters, most famously, Flip the Frog. Flip starred in only 15 cartoons over a period of three years before being dropped by distributor MGM. Unlike his contemporary rival, Mickey Mouse, merchandise featuring the character is incredibly rare, particularly pieces in good condition such as the ones offered here.
