(Jay Ward, 1960s) Two original hand-painted production backgrounds and five frames of 35mm film used in the production of early Cap'n Crunch commercials. Accomplished in gouache with pencil accents and a photo applique of product boxes, the backgrounds measuring 10.5" x 14" display in fine condition. Measuring 3.75"x1.25", the film segment displays in good condition with typical magenta shift from age. Jay Ward was a prominent figure in children's animation during the 1960s, known for his remarkable roster of cartoon characters, including Rocky and Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right, Peabody and Sherman, and George of the Jungle. His influence extended beyond television shows, as his studio also designed iconic cereal mascots such as Cap’n Crunch, Quisp, and Quake, along with a series of animated commercials that helped solidify the connection between breakfast cereals and Saturday morning cartoons. Perhaps Jay Ward’s most significant contribution to the medium was the creation of "Crusader Rabbit," which holds the distinction of being the first animated series made exclusively for television.
