(Barks, 1969) An original oil painting, “Luiseno Seed Gathers,” by Disney Legend Carl Barks. After Barks “officially” retired from writing and drawing comic books in 1966, and before his first painting of Ducks in 1971, he experimented in subjects of his personal interest: modern churches, landscapes, ranch girls, and more. In 1966 he began a series of 11 paintings of early Native American societies that touched on a theme he carried through many of his comic stories, of people and lands “long ago and far away.” The Luiseno are natives of Southern California dating to before the Spanish arrived in the 1700s. Here Barks depicts their gathering of thistle sage seeds in large woven baskets of Luiseno design, on a bright day before the Palomar mountains in the San Jose Valley region. This work is near the culmination of Barks’ studies of native peoples, with only two more such works before moving on to another series. Included in the lot is an early 6” x 8” pencil sketch by Barks studying the theme. Measuring 18” x 30” on a 20” x 30” canvas in a 26” x 38” wooden frame, the piece is signed by Barks in the lower right and in fine condition, with very slight wear to the frame from display. In 1935, Carl Barks first found work at the Walt Disney Studio as an animation inbetweener. He worked his way onto the Donald Duck story team, then in 1942 left the Studio but still submitted art and stories for Donald Duck comics to Western Publishing. It was here he found his true calling, writing and drawing adventures for Donald Duck and his nephews, and creating Scrooge McDuck, Magica De Spell, and the entire world of Duckburg. Barks continued writing and drawing the duck’s adventures long into his reported retirement, and after a few years exploring personal interests in paintings, found great success selling paintings of the world of Duckburg he had created.
