(Disney, 1929) An incredibly rare original production background from “The Haunted House,” a 1929 Mickey Mouse short. Pre-1930 Disney artwork is extremely hard to find, as most was destroyed or lost with each move of the Studio and their efforts to conserve space. This background is from the 14th Mickey Mouse cartoon ever produced and is one of only two backgrounds from this film known to still exist. The short was animated almost entirely by Ub Iwerks and features dancing skeletons reminiscent of “The Skeleton Dance,” which was released a few months prior. During the 1960s, the Walt Disney Studios used this background for an exhibition, and recreated the Mickey Mouse cel as well as a cel of the keyboard, stool, and pedals from existing original production drawings. The recreated image of Mickey is key to the original background and can be found around 6:03 into the short. Mickey is 4" tall, and the original watercolor, gouache, and ink background measures 12"x10". This incredible piece of Mickey Mouse history is in fine production-used condition.
